'...only a novel or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour are conveyed to the world in the best chosen language.'

'...the gentleman who has not pleasure in a good novel must be intolerably stupid.'

From Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen.

The Reading Group is now well established within the Club and meets approximately once a month and discusses a different book at each meeting. If you wish to become involved in this group please contact the Club Office.

The books read, or re-read, and discussed by the group vary widely with a healthy balance between contemporary and classic novels. Occasionally the Reading Group will hold a joint meeting with the Film and Theatre Group where the discussion of the book is followed by a joint meal, a viewing of the film-of-the-book, and then as time permits a comparison of the book and the film.
